Choral Auditions for Night Song

Night Song emulates the longstanding compline liturgy at St. Mark’s Cathedral in Seattle but with some creative twists. Night Song is high church and features a musical fusion of Gregorian chant, Renaissance polyphony, and, on selected Sundays, instrumental jazz. It occurs every Sunday night from Advent I (November 29, 2009) through Pentecost Day (May 23, 2010) at the resonant St. John’s Episcopal Church in Jamaica Plain.

A different choral group sings each Sunday of the month, making a singer’s commitment only one weekend a month. There is a two-hour Saturday afternoon rehearsal (1-3 PM) and then a shorter rehearsal and singing the liturgy on Sunday evening (6-8 PM).

We’re seeking singers of all voice parts (including countertenors) who have a passion for Renaissance choral literature and chant, clear tone, and genuine musicianship. Placement will be in one of the following ensembles:

Ensemble of men (about 12 singers), conducted by Scott Metcalfe and James Busby. Sings December 20, January 24, February 28, March 28, April 25, and May 16.

New ensemble of men and woman (8 singers), no conductor but coached periodically by early music choral experts, rehearses twice a month and sings a 25-minute choral program once a month in addition to the compline liturgy. Sings December 6, January 17, February 21, March 21, April 18, and May 9.

Continuing ensemble of men and women (about 16 singers), conducted by Sr. Carolyn Darr of the Society of St. Margaret and Daryl Bichel, Artistic Director for Night Song. Sings December 13, January 10, February 14, March 14, April 11, and May 23.

Quartet of men, opening for a tenor. Sings November 29, January 3, February 7, March 7, April 4 (tentative), and May 2.
